Apple Glass, the company’s rumoured smart-glasses project, could already be on sale today if it weren’t for a series of objections raised by former chief design officer Jony Ive – or so claims a report by Bloomberg.
Among the issues was a plan to produce an AR/VR headset with a separate hub. “The processing capabilities were so advanced – and produced so much heat – that the technology couldn’t be crammed into a sleek headset,” writes Bloomberg. Ive, however, preferred a design incorporating more basic augmented reality technology into a single pair of glasses without a separate hub.
In the end, Apple CEO Tim Cook sided with Ive. The advanced tech developed for the hub wasn’t wasted, however, and will be put to use in Apple’s AMR-based Macs.
A plausible and detailed Apple Glass leak-dump by Jon Prosser earlier this year suggests the product will be announced in late 2020 or early 2021 – alongside the iPhone 12, if possible – and finally launched in 2021 or 2022. For all the latest information, read our Apple AR glasses rumour roundup.
